Bass Chasin in Ohio report for Wellington

Once again we get to the lake late due to work commitments and cannot launch until 3:45, but the women said we could fish until dark.  Ain't they sweet?

Having fished this lake for many years I am still amazed at its clarity of water and this year its heavy weed growth.  Located off route 58 just south of Wellington it can be a moral breaker or real buzz depending on the day. Today  it was a buzz and it taught us something we can all learn from.

We had caught several fish and were fighting high winds that started kicking up making fishing   difficult due to boat control.  We moved to the middle to look for deeper water as we had agreed that we had to go deeper in the clear water and heat we have been having.

If you know this site you know we preach deep water in the heat and to get away from shore.  Today taught us what deep can really be.  We found the key when we anchored in 16 feet and began throwing Berkeley Bungee Worms into the open water near the weeds we were sitting in.  Letting the worm sink slowly I felt that all familar tap and boated a nice 18.5 inch bass. Click for picture. We proceeded to take 4 bass all over 2.5 pounds in a short period of time not knowing how deep we were fishing until we moved across the spot when the action let up.  We found we were throwing into 25 to 27 feet of water. We had not in the past worked those depths consistently  My son-in-law later boated a beauty Click for picture on a football head tube jig where the depth finder read 31 feet!

It seems this year has been unusual with the early heat and clarity of water we have experienced this year.  We are crankbait fans but have found the going tough due to weeds weeds and more weeds.  And the fish they have been producing are nothing to brag about.  Today the lake was a real buzz because of the fish it gave up, and the fact that we learned that deep sometimes can be alot deeper than you want to fish.  Is there a point to this?  Yes.  No matter how long you do this you are always learning and today we learned that you will find those quality fish by trying things you are not good at.
So keep this thought in mind. No matter what deep is to you, find deeper and learn from it.  We sure did!

Tight lines for now.
