I was able to get out on thursday of this week at Berlin. I knew the weather was going to turn sour this weekend. Actually, thursday was probably the only nice day this week. The weather was beautiful. The fishing wasn't bad either. I got to my first spot at 8:15am and stayed till 5pm. I ended up with 5 largemouth in the boat. Not to mention the walleye and catfish. the bass were all on the small side. 10", 11", and three twelve inchers. I had three or four get off. All the bass were caught on medium to large Strike King crankbaits in a bass pattern. I was casting into shore making shure the lure was maintaining bottom contact in 2-10 feet of water. All the strikes came with bottom contact, an occasional pause, and retrieval speed changes. A very aggressive and fast paced presentation. I was even using a deeper diving crankbait in shallow water just to assure contact. My most successful area was at the bottom end of the resevior where there was a slight bottle neck. The water was pretty calm and there was only a slight breeze, but there was tiny current blowing into one side of the bottleneck. I hooked up with the first bass on the first cast into the current but lost it. Soon after I boated two from the same spot. I had no luck fishing deeper water with the same cranks. At the latter part of my trip I broke out the old 7" power worm and started flippin and pitchin into the shoreline overhanging bush. Last sunday I had a good sized one on doing this, but he/she threw the hook. I got a good look at it as it emerged from the water. It would have been a nice catch. Boy did that hurt. Well guess what happened again this week. Although this time I didn't feel the hit. It took the bait like it would a flippin tube. It took it and ran. It caught me sleeping. I did set the hook and it partially emerged from the water. Another nice one got away. I believe that you can put numbers in the boat with fast moving baits, but the good ones are sitting near the shore under thick cover. Two weeks in a row had a good sized one on pitching the black power worm. Maybe I'll get them next time. I have been more impressed with Berlin this year. I agree with you about its great multi species potential. After last year I almost gave up on Berlin, but this year its looking up. Let me know if you guys got out today. Take care.
